1. What is Slinda?
Slinda is a progestogen-only oral contraceptive pill that contains drospirenone. It is used to prevent pregnancy and is an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use oestrogen-containing contraceptives.
2. How does Slinda work?
Slinda works mainly by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the lining of the uterus, making pregnancy less likely.
3. How is Slinda taken?
Slinda is taken once daily, with 24 active tablets and 4 inactive tablets in each pack. It should be taken at the same time each day for maximum effectiveness.
4. How effective is Slinda?
When taken correctly, Slinda is highly effective at preventing pregnancy. It has a longer missed-pill window than traditional progestogen-only pills, making it more forgiving if a dose is delayed.
5. What are the common side effects?
Common side effects include irregular bleeding or spotting, headache, breast tenderness, nausea, mood changes, and acne. Bleeding patterns often settle after the first few months.
6. Who can use Slinda?
Slinda may be suitable for women who cannot take oestrogen, such as those with migraine with aura, a history of blood clots, or during breastfeeding. Your doctor will assess suitability.
7. Who should not use Slinda?
Slinda may not be suitable for women with severe kidney disease, adrenal disease, liver disease, or hormone-sensitive cancers. It should also be used cautiously in those with high potassium levels.
8. Does Slinda affect weight or mood?
Some women notice changes in weight or mood, but these effects vary. Most women tolerate Slinda well, and significant weight gain is uncommon.
9. Can Slinda help with period symptoms?
Yes. Slinda may reduce period pain and bleeding, and some women experience lighter periods or no periods over time.
10. Does Slinda protect against sexually transmitted infections?
No. Slinda does not protect against STIs. Condoms are recommended for STI protection.
