1. What is fenofibrate?

Fenofibrate is a cholesterol-lowering medication used mainly to reduce high triglyceride levels and improve abnormal blood fats. It is often prescribed when triglycerides are very high or when other lipid treatments alone are not sufficient.

2. How does fenofibrate work?

Fenofibrate works by activating a receptor involved in fat metabolism, which helps the body break down triglycerides more effectively. This lowers triglyceride levels and can modestly increase “good” HDL cholesterol.

3. Who is fenofibrate usually prescribed for?

Fenofibrate is commonly used in adults with very high triglycerides, mixed lipid disorders, or those at risk of pancreatitis due to high triglyceride levels. It may also be used alongside statins in selected patients under medical supervision.

4. How is fenofibrate taken?

Fenofibrate is taken once daily by mouth, with or without food depending on the formulation. It should be taken regularly and as prescribed for best effect.

5. How long does fenofibrate take to work?

Improvements in triglyceride levels are usually seen within a few weeks, but full benefit may take several months. Blood tests are used to monitor response and safety.

6. What are the common side effects?

Common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, headache, muscle aches, and abnormal liver blood tests. Most people tolerate fenofibrate well.

7. Are there serious side effects?

Rare but serious side effects include muscle injury, liver problems, gallstones, and kidney issues. The risk may be higher when fenofibrate is combined with statins, so monitoring is important.

8. Who should not take fenofibrate?

Fenofibrate may not be suitable for people with severe kidney or liver disease, gallbladder disease, or allergy to fibrates. Your doctor will assess suitability before prescribing.

9. Does fenofibrate replace lifestyle changes?

No. Fenofibrate works best alongside healthy diet, weight control, regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake, and managing diabetes or other metabolic conditions.

10. Do I need regular blood tests while on fenofibrate?

Yes. Blood tests are usually required to monitor cholesterol levels, liver function, kidney function, and muscle enzymes, especially during the first few months of treatment.
