1. What is Jardiance?

Jardiance is the brand name for empagliflozin, a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It helps lower blood sugar levels and also provides benefits for heart and kidney health in certain people.

2. How does Jardiance work?

Jardiance works by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, allowing excess sugar to be passed out in the urine. This lowers blood glucose levels and can also lead to mild weight loss and blood pressure reduction.

3. Who is Jardiance usually prescribed for?

Jardiance is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes, particularly those with cardiovascular disease, heart failure, or chronic kidney disease, as it reduces the risk of complications in these conditions.

4. How is Jardiance taken?

Jardiance is taken once daily by mouth, usually in the morning, with or without food. It should be taken consistently as prescribed.

5. What are the common side effects?

Common side effects include increased urination, thirst, urinary tract infections, and genital fungal infections. These effects occur because more sugar is excreted in the urine.

6. Are there serious side effects?

Serious but uncommon side effects include dehydration, low blood pressure, diabetic ketoacidosis (rare), kidney problems, and severe infections of the genital area. Prompt medical attention is needed if concerning symptoms develop.

7. Who should not take Jardiance?

Jardiance may not be suitable for people with severe kidney impairment, type 1 diabetes, recurrent urinary infections, or a history of diabetic ketoacidosis. Your doctor will assess risks and benefits.

8. Does Jardiance cause low blood sugar?

On its own, Jardiance rarely causes low blood sugar. However, the risk increases if taken with insulin or certain other diabetes medications.

9. Does Jardiance help with weight loss?

Jardiance may cause modest weight loss due to the loss of glucose in the urine, but it is not primarily a weight-loss medication.

10. Do I need regular monitoring while on Jardiance?

Yes. Regular blood tests are usually needed to monitor kidney function, blood sugar control, and overall safety while taking Jardiance.
